Although the terms rebuilt Pontiac automatic transmission and remanufactured Pontiac automatic transmission are often used as synonyms; that is not the case. There is a fine but very significant difference between a rebuilt automatic transmission and a remanufactured automatic transmission.
In the remanufacturing of the automatic transmission, all the soft parts i.e. the gaskets, seals and other such parts are replaced irrespective of the amount of wear and tear suffered by the parts. The hard parts are cleaned and replaced as per the damage suffered. The replacement made complies with the specifications of the original equipment manufacturer to the maximum extent possible. The remanufactured automatic transmission is tested and the process ends with the certification of the transmission
In case of rebuilding an automatic transmission, the soft parts are not replaced irrespective of the damage. Parts that are in a good shape, irrespective of whether they are hard or soft are not replaced.
In the former, the idea is to install an automatic transmission that is as close as a new transmission while in case of the latter; the idea is to enhance life of the transmission by replacement of damaged parts.
