Vehicle and Engine
Technology
Heinz Heisler has again
set new standards in Motor vehicle
textbook writing in bringing his
second edition of Vehicle and Engine
Technology up-to-date. Of note is
the up-to-date information regarding
five speed gearboxes, there is also
a very good detailed description
of how the gearboxes baulkring synchromesh
works. For those students who are
interested in automatic gearboxes
ther is an excellent description
of how the four speed automatic
gearbox operates. To reinforce the
completeness of this book is a very
good section dealing with air suspension
systems along with other commercial
vehicle topics. A topic which students
find difficult to understand is
detonation and pre-ignition, to
help students understand there are
good diagrams and descriptions which
should allow the student ot better
understand the phenomenon. Petrol
fuel induction turbulance and air
swirl is well desribed with the
aid of excellent flame front diagrams.
Also covered is the direct injection
Mitsubishi GDI petrol engine fuel
system. Honda's variable valve timing
is also described. Other topics,
which are well covered, include
air conditioning, petrol fuel injection,
electronically controlled and common
rail diesel fuel injection systems,
exhaust and exhaust gas recirculation
systems. Detailed drawings abound
in the book with excellent coverage
of electronic transistor injection
systems; there is a good description
of the working of the Hall generator
and alternator again using excellent
diagrams. The chapter dealing with
electrical auxiliary equipment deals
very well with how gauges work,
other topics include two speed wipers,
electric windows and central locking.
As I have already said this is an
excellent book worthy of any lecturers
or mechanics bookshelf. AMVT (Association
of Motor Vehicle Teachers)
